How To Jump-Start A Car

No one wants to deal with their car not starting.  It’s never convenient.  But, if you know what to do, you can get yourself back on the road in no time.

Here’s how to jump-start a car:

  1. Park the charging vehicle closely to the vehicle with the battery so the cables can reach to both cars (nose to nose works best).
  2. Connect the clamps in this order:
  3. Connect the red positive clamp to the positive terminal on the battery receiving the charge.
  4. Connect the red positive clamp to the positive terminal on the battery providing the jump.
  5. Connect the black negative clamp to the negative terminal on the battery providing the jump
  6. Connect the black negative clamp to a bare metal surface on the vehicle receiving the charge.
  7. Start the good battery car and let it idle for a few minutes.
  8. Start the vehicle with the dead battery and let idle for 15mins before you start driving.
  9. Once the car is running, remove the cables in this order:
  10. Remove black clip not attached to battery
  11. Remove black clip attached to battery
  12. Remove red clip from car battery providing the jump
  13. Remove red clip from car battery receiving the charge

After you have successfully jumped the car, the battery should continue to hold a charge. If your battery dies again the next time you start it, there may be a larger issue with the batteries ability to stay charged.
