Top 10 Items to Keep in Your Vehicle

When it comes to your vehicle, let talk about preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. Even with good maintenance and proper care for your vehicle, practicing good driving and following the rules; there is always the chance that something may happen to your vehicle. As the Boy Scouts say, “always be prepared”, we believe that these 10 items will bring you peace of mind, should you find yourself in need.
- Spare Tire and Equipment
Tools required to change a tire would be a tire jack, lug wrench, and a tire iron. If you can’t change a tire yourself, keep the number of a towing company or your CAA membership in the vehicle.
- Jumper cables
Dead batteries happen. Jumper cables are your lifeline to get back on the road quicker. Portable jumper cables with batteries built in that do not require having another car present may be a good option if you travel to remote areas.
- Tire Pressure Gauge
Keeping your tires properly inflated can help reduce the chance of a flat or punctured tire. A tire pressure gauge will measure amount of air in your tires so you can ensure sure they are not over or under inflated.
- Portable Charger
An incredibly helpful tool if you find yourself in a vehicle without power and a dying phone battery. In an emergency it can keep your phone charged so you can be reached or call for help. These can also be valuable on road trips, if you’re camping along the way, and may not have access to a power source to recharge your electronics.
- First Aid Kit
One of the most important items to carry in your car. You never know when you are going to come across a situation that requires medical attention. The quicker first aid is applied the safer the situation will be.
- Blanket
A blanket can be used for comfort over long drives but also can help keep you safe and warm if you are stuck in your car overnight. If you happen to find yourself at the scene of an accident a blanket can also be used to help treat shock or other injuries.
- Reflective Triangles/ Road Flares
Reflective triangles or road flares can alert traffic of your broken-down vehicle and keep everyone safer. Giving an earlier warning to drivers gives them more time to prepare and slow down and make you more visible if you’re broken down when it’s dark out.
- Snow Brush/ Ice Scraper
We see some very cold weather during the winter. An ice scraper can help defrost your car and get you on your way quicker. Also, wipe off the snow on the top of your car, it can become a hazard to those driving around you.
- Flashlight
There are so many situations a flashlight can be useful in. From helping to change a tire at night or alerting traffic if you’re broken down on the side of the road. Don’t forget extra batteries!
- Emergency Escape Tools
An emergency seatbelt cutter and window breaker can be a lifesaver in critical situations. Keep these within arm’s reach, like in your glove box. A multi tool can also be useful in various situations since they can be used for many things.
It’s better to be prepared and never have to use these items, then to need them and not have them!
